Uproar over Savarkar’s picture in Karnataka Assembly: Congress walks out of the House, BJP asks – should Dawood’s picture be put up?

There was a ruckus on Monday when Savarkar’s picture was put up in the Karnataka Assembly. The entire opposition, including the Congress, staged a walkout from the assembly in protest. Many opposition MLAs including former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have also written a letter to the Speaker regarding this issue. The letter demanded that photographs of Valmiki, Basavanna, Kanak Das, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel be put up in the House.

After the opposition of the Congress, the BJP has retaliated. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi said- There should be ideological differences, but Savarkar is a freedom fighter. If his picture is not put up, then should Dawood Ibrahim’s picture be put up in the House?

Congress bid – Assembly Speaker took a unilateral decision
Congress leader Siddaramaiah said that this is not a protest. It is our only demand that photographs of all national leaders and social reformers should be displayed in the assembly hall. Also said that the Assembly Speaker has taken a unilateral decision to put Veer Savarkar’s picture in the Assembly.

Siddaramaiah said- I am not against putting anyone’s picture. But with all this, the government wants to divert the attention of the people from the real issues like law and order.

Karnataka Congress chief and MLA DK Shivakumar accused the state government of disrupting the proceedings of the assembly through such moves. Shivakumar said that he wanted that the proceedings of our assembly should not take place. They want to disrupt it. They have brought this picture because we are going to raise many issues of corruption against them. They do not have any development agenda.

The issue of Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute will come up in the session
Today was the first day of the winter session of the state assembly. On the very first day, the opposition walked out on this issue. The issue of border dispute with neighboring Maharashtra is likely to figure during the 10-day winter session of the Karnataka Assembly.

The Belagavi police denied permission to the Maharashtra Integration Committee to organize the Mahamela convention. At the same time, members of Maharashtra Integration Committee and NCP are protesting near Kognoli toll plaza over the border dispute. Section 144 has been implemented here, yet people are protesting by gathering a crowd. Heavy police force is present here.

However, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said that for the first time the Union Home Minister has mediated an inter-state border dispute (between Maharashtra and Karnataka). There should be no politics on this issue now. We must stand together with border residents.
