The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed the establishment of 14 new medical colleges across the state, adding a total of 1,400 MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25. This information was shared by the Department of Medical Education through social media, highlighting the aim to bolster medical education in UP.
The state government has submitted applications to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to seek approval for the increase in the number of colleges and MBBS seats. Upon receiving approval from the NMC, these additional seats will augment the existing 8,000 MBBS seats in the state, following the completion of physical verification processes at the new campuses.
The proposed new medical colleges will be located in districts such as Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Kaushambi, among others, within the state. Additionally, the medical education department has initiated the process of appointing faculty members, including the principal, for these upcoming colleges.
In March of the previous year, the Department of Medical Education took significant strides by adding 1,300 MBBS seats and inaugurating 13 new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. This initiative was aimed at strengthening medical education within the state. Continuing this trajectory, the Department of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, has declared its intention to further augment the capacity of government medical colleges by adding 1,300 additional MBBS seats. Additionally, 13 new medical colleges are slated to commence their inaugural academic sessions from the academic year 2023-24.
Uttar Pradesh currently boasts a total of 65 medical colleges, comprising 35 government and 30 private institutions, spread across 59 districts.
Furthermore, the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, informed Parliament of a notable 82 percent surge in the number of medical colleges nationwide, rising from 387 before 2014 to 704 by July of the preceding year. Additionally, there has been a remarkable 110 percent increase in the number of MBBS seats, soaring from 51,348 to 107,948 during the same period.
