The Budget session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly began on Friday (February 2), a day after the state Cabinet led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The session is poised to set the tone and tenor of the Lok Sabha elections, with Yogi-Adityanath gearing to present its largest-ever annual budget of over Rs 7 lakh crore for 2024-2025.

The UP legislative assembly also is likely to witness uproarious scenes during the next few days with the opposition parties preparing to highlight government failures.

The budget session began with Governor Anandiben Patel addressing both the Houses — Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council — together in the Assembly pavilion on the first day.

Addressing the media at Vidhan Sabha, CM Yogi Adityanath “congratulated” everyone on the Ayodhya Ram temple ‘Pran Pratishtha’.

“The Budget 2024-25 will be presented in the session and there will be a discussion on it. UP legislative is the centre of the hope, aspirations and expectations of the people of the state. I appeal to the opposition members that we need to make the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly as centres of positive discussions,” he said.

Sources said the session is likely to be of five days and the budget is likely to be tabled on February 5.

CM Yogi-led UP government’s largest-ever Rs 7.65 lakh crore budget is expected to focus on infrastructure, tourism, and welfare measures for farmers, youths, and women along with other possible populist announcements ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Chief Minister Adityanath has reportedly asked the BJP-led Central government for the allocation of more funds for the development infrastructure. Allocations to capital expenditure and some ongoing projects are also expected to increase.
