BJP MLA Ramdular Gond was Sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment by an Uttar Pradesh court on Friday for the rape of a girl nine years ago, setting the stage for his disqualification from the state Assembly.
Ahsan Ullah Khan, the additional district and session judge of the MP-MLA court in Sonbhadra, also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the MLA from Duddhi assembly seat to be used in the rape survivor’s rehabilitation.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Satyaprakash Tripathi, the court held Gond guilty on December 12.
What Happened Nine Years Ago?
In 2014, a case was registered against Ramdular Gond under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) as well as under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on the complaint of the rape survivor’s brother.
At the time, Gond was not an MLA but his wife was a gram pradhan. The trial in the case began in a POCSO court, however, it was later transferred to the MP-MLA court when Gond won the Duddhi Assembly seat.
Before the pronouncement of the verdict earlier in the day, the MLA’s lawyer urged the court for minimum punishment assuring that Gond would take all care of the family of the rape survivor, who is now married and the mother of an eight-year-old.
Her brother expressed satisfaction over the court’s verdict saying she got justice after a long period of struggle.
