Mahakal police station incharge Ajay Verma has taken it upon himself to complete the 12-year-old Ujjain rape survivor’s medical treatment, education and marriage. The cop said many people have come forward to support the minor girl, who was turned away by many when she went seeking help after being allegedly raped by an autorickshaw driver on September 25. The shocking visuals of the child in a semi-naked and visibly injured state are from CCTV footage of the area under Verma’s supervision.

“I have taken the responsibility to help the girl with medical treatment, education, and marriage… Many people have come forward to support me in this resolution… I believe that all responsibilities will be completed in a good manner…” Verma said.

Police arrested the accused in the case on Thursday evening and was admitted to the civil hospital when he injured himself while trying to flee custody. The accused was taken to the crime spot to recreate the crime scene and collect evidence like torn clothes, said Verma.

The girl’s condition, admitted to an Indore hospital, is improving slowly, said a member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

A special investigation team (SIT) of police is conducting further probe.

The father of the accused, meanwhile, demanded capital punishment for his son while the local bar association appealed that no lawyer should defend him in the court.

“It is a shameful act. Neither have I gone to hospital to meet him, no will I go to the police station or courts. My son has committed a crime, therefore he should be hanged,” his father said.

Ujjain Bar Council president Ashok Yadav said the incident had damaged the reputation of the temple city. “We are appealing to our members not to take up the case of the accused,” he said.
