The central government issued a new advisory for news websites, OTT platforms and private satellite channels. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said in this advisory that they should not run advertisements of betting websites or apps on their platforms. Legal action will be taken if the advisory is not followed.

Advisory was also issued in June
Earlier in June this year, the central government had also issued guidelines to control misleading advertisements targeting children. Film actors were also asked to fix accountability for advertisements. Surrogate advertisements were also banned. Advertising without proving its veracity was also banned. Its purpose is to stop misleading advertisements.

In the new advisory, private satellite television channels have been asked to refrain from advertising on online offshore betting platforms or their surrogate news websites or any such product or service.

Instructions to private channels also
Private satellite television channels have also been given strict advice in the new advisory. They have been told not to advertise online offshore betting platforms or their surrogate news websites. Also, these platforms have been asked not to advertise in a surrogate manner.

Separate advisory for digital media
In a separate advisory to publishers of news and current affairs content on digital media and OTT platforms, the ministry has issued a similar directive. They have been asked not to advertise betting for Indian audiences.

As per the Information Technology (Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, the ministry has stated that advertisements of betting platforms are an illegal activity, which cannot be shown on digital media.
