Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Wednesday sought the Centre’s immediate intervention to find a permanent solution to the ongoing tussle over the closure of roads in Secunderabad Cantonment area by the Army authorities.

Zaheerabad TRS MP BB Patil raised the issue in Lok Sabha and pointed out that the Cantonment roads were not only crucial for the movement of locals, but also provide road connectivity to areas like Nagpur and Chandrapur in Maharashtra from Hyderabad.

Patil said Secunderabad Cantonment area was spread over a large part of the northern side of Hyderabad. Two major roads connecting Nagpur and interstate highway connecting Chandrapur and a few State roads pass through the Cantonment.

Over a period of time, roads in the city have been widened owing to growing traffic demand. However, the State could not do so in Cantonment limits because the local officials were not permitting the same, he said.

The State government was now proposing to have the roads further widened and construct flyovers and skyways in order to meet the fast-growing traffic requirement. Periodically, the roads in the Cantonment are closed to civilian traffic during night time, causing much inconvenience to the public and creating friction with the local authorities.

“We request the Ministry of Defence to issue instructions to the local Cantonment officials to extend necessary cooperation in this regard and provide a permanent solution to these vexatious issues at the earliest,” Patil said.
