The Railway Board said that not three trains but only one train, the Coromandel Express, was the victim of the accident.

How did the train accident happen in Odisha’s Balasore on the evening of 2 June? Railway Board has given the answer to this question in detail. The board informed that not three trains but only one train Coromandel Express was the victim of the accident. The Coromandel Express collided with a goods train parked on the track, then rammed into the bogies of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Coromandel.

The speed limit on the line where the accident took place is 130 KM per hour and both the trains were running at the same speed. The accident happened due to a problem in signaling. 275 people have died in the accident and more than 1000 people are injured.

Know in 5 points what the railway told on the accident…

1. How did the accident happen?
On the evening of June 2, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express was going from Chennai to Howrah. Whereas, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was coming from Howrah. Coromandel Express received green signal on the loop line on which the goods train was standing. After this the Coromandel Express collided with the goods train. Iron was loaded in the goods train, that is why it bore the brunt of the accident.

On the other hand, some coaches of the Coromandel Express fell on the third track after hitting the goods train. After this, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express coming on the same track collided with the bogies of Coromandel.

2. Both the trains were not overspeed
Coromandel Express was going at a speed of 128 KM per hour. The second train Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was running at a speed of 126 KM per hour. The speed limit of trains on this line is 130 KM per hour, so neither of the two trains were overspeeding. The Coromandel Express was given the green signal. Green signal means to tell the driver (loco pilot) that the way ahead is clear and he can proceed with his maximum speed.

No one had reached for identification of 100 bodies till Sunday afternoon, after which these bodies were sent to Bhubaneswar.

3. Trouble in signaling caused the accident
The board said that according to the information received so far, the accident occurred due to a problem in signaling. It is too early to say much on this matter. The details will come out only after the investigation, only after that something can be said with the claim. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had also said that the accident happened due to change in electronic interlocking.

4. Only one train met with an accident
Railway Board member Jaya Verma Sinha insisted that only one train (Coromandel Express) was the victim of the accident and not three. As is being speculated. The accident happened near Balasore Bahnaga Bazar station. It is a four line station, with two main lines in the center and two loop lines around it. Goods trains stand on loop lines.

Photographs of those who lost their lives in the accident have been released so that people can identify the bodies.

5. There can be two reasons for signal failure
Railway Board’s Principal Executive Director Sandeep Mathur told that there is a point to take the train on the loop line. He has to operate, by which it is decided whether the train will go straight or will go on loop line.

Wherein, the signals are interlocked in such a way that it is known that the line ahead is not busy and the train is going on the loop line. This is very important for taking the train safely on the track. Signaling problems arise when someone works on the track without the knowledge of the railways. Due to this many times there is a possibility of signal failure due to cable cut. At the same time, another reason could be a short circuit.

Issued number to help people
Railway Board said that our helpline number 139 is available. This is not a call center number, our senior officers are answering people’s phone calls. We are trying to connect with as many people as possible. The family members of the injured or deceased can call us. We will assist the caller to meet his family member (who was on board the train).
