Tomato rates have hit century in many cities of Himachal. Due to this, tomato has disappeared from the kitchen of poor people. In Solan and Shimla mandis today, tomatoes were sold in wholesale between Rs 50 to Rs 68 per kg. By the time it reaches the common consumer, its rate has gone up to 80 to 100 rupees. Meanwhile, the demand for Him Sona tomato is increasing in the markets across the country.

Till 15 days back, tomatoes were available at Rs 20 to 35 per kg in the suburbs of Shimla. Today its rates have increased three to four times. Him Sona variety tomato is being sold 10 to 15 percent more expensive than the hybrid. The rise in the prices of food articles has given another blow to the public. However, the farmers of Solan and Sirmaur districts are compensating for the loss by getting good prices.

55% of tomato crop destroyed due to hailstorm
This time about 55 percent of the tomato crop in the state has been destroyed due to hailstorm. Now due to the continuous bad weather, the necessary sunlight is not being received. As a result, the remaining crop is not ready and very few tomatoes are coming in the market. This is the reason why tomato rates are skyrocketing.

Him Sona tomato demand increased in Rajasthan
Tomato of Solan district is famous all over the country. From here tomatoes are supplied to every corner of the country. This time there is a lot of demand coming from Rajasthan.

Hoping to make up for the loss by getting good rates: Farmer
Solan’s farmer Naresh told that these days tomato rates are getting good. If such rates continue to be available throughout the season, then farmers will only be able to recover losses due to hailstorm. Shimla trader Neetu Sagar told that tomatoes are coming in less quantity in the mandi. Because of this, tomato has become costlier in wholesale itself. Today, tomatoes are being sold in Dhali Mandi for Rs 55 to 65 per kg.

More demand coming from these states: Harish
Harish Mehta, agent of Solan Mandi, said that this time there is a lot of demand for tomatoes from Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and Bangalore as well. It is expected that this time the farmers will continue to get good rates as the tomato crop has been damaged due to excessive rains in the plain states.
