On this day in 2014, Telangana became the new state of the country. The 50-year-old demand for separate statehood of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh was fulfilled 8 years ago on this day. On 1 November 1956, the erstwhile Hyderabad, ie Telangana province, was merged with Andhra Pradesh on linguistic lines under the recommendations of the States Reorganization Commission.

This part of the state was backward in economic, educational and all other levels as compared to other parts. Shortly after this, the demand for making Telangana a separate state arose.

KCR became the first CM of Telangana

The first major movement for this happened in 1969, just 13 years after the formation of a new state in the form of Andhra Pradesh. Since then, the agitation continued till 2013 demanding the formation of Telangana as a separate state. Finally, Telangana became a new state in 2014 after a struggle that lasted for more than 50 years. K Chandrashekhar Rao, who went on a hunger strike in 2009 for the formation of a new state, ie KCR was elected the first Chief Minister of the state and is still the Chief Minister of the state.

The movement to create a separate Telangana state lasted for 5 decades

After the movement for the first time in 1969 to demand the creation of a separate state of Telangana, there were also major agitations in 1972 and 2009. In 1969, the ‘Jai Telangana’ movement turned violent and nearly 300 people died. At that time this movement had calmed down, but no agreement could be reached. The demand for a separate state gradually gained momentum.

After this the ‘Jai Andhra’ movement started in 1972. In the 1998 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party supported the demand for a separate Telangana state by giving the slogan ‘One vote, two states’. In the year 2001, K. Chandrashekhar Rao founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). It is clear from the name of the party that it was most vocal for creating a separate state.

Till the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, political activism regarding Telangana had increased. BJP had announced that if it came to power, it would make Telangana a separate state. Meanwhile in September 2009, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. s. Rajasekhara Reddy died in a helicopter crash. This created an atmosphere of political instability in Andhra Pradesh.

On November 29, KCR started a hunger strike. As KCR’s hunger strike progressed, the movement demanding a separate state for Telangana intensified. Along with political parties, students, employees and social organizations also joined this movement. Then 11 days later, the central government ended KCR’s hunger strike, assuring him to start the process for the formation of Telangana state.

In February 2010, the Central Government constituted a committee of 5 members under the leadership of Justice Srikrishna. In December 2010, the committee submitted its report to the government. During this there were demonstrations regarding Telangana. The Congress had weakened before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi was also emerging as a big challenge in national politics.

Then on 3 October 2013, the Central Government approved the formation of Telangana. The state formally took shape on 2 June and Chandrashekhar Rao became the first Chief Minister of the state. Despite the formation of Telangana, there was a tussle between the two states over the city of Hyderabad, but on the recommendation of the Justice Srikrishna Committee, the Center declared Hyderabad as the joint capital of both the states for 10 years. In 2015, Amaravati was decided to become the new capital of Hyderabad.
