On this day in 1826, the first Hindi language newspaper ‘Udant Martand’ was started from Calcutta as a weekly paper. This 8-page newspaper used to come out every Tuesday. Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla, born in Kanpur and a lawyer by profession, was its editor. Udant Martand used to write vocally against the repressive policies of the East India Company.

Because of this, the newspaper company started knocking in the eyes of the government and the government started putting legal hurdles in the publication of the newspaper. The Company government had given the facility of postal etc. to the letters of the missionaries, but Udant Martand did not get this facility.

Eventually, the newspaper had to be closed after only 19 months on 19 December 1827, after financial troubles and legal difficulties. By the way, newspapers in India were started on 29 January 1780. Then an Englishman James Augustus Hickey started the first newspaper in English called ‘Calcutta General Advertiser’. It was the first newspaper of any language in India as well as the Asian subcontinent.

After this gradually the process of publication of newspapers started in India. Newspapers were also published in Bengali, Persian and Urdu languages.

1981: Assassination of Bangladesh President Zia Ur Rahman

On 29 May 1981, President of Bangladesh Zia Ur Rahman was scheduled to visit Chittagong. Four days before this, he transferred Chittagong’s GOC Major General Mohammad Abul Manzoor and also ordered that General Manzoor should not come to the airport to pick him up.

Manzoor was the highest military officer of that area. He was angry with both these decisions of the President. The security forces were aware of Manzoor’s displeasure. The security forces urged the President to postpone the program to go to Chittagong, but Zia did not agree, he reached Chittagong.

The attackers left for the Circuit House at around 3.30 in the morning of May 30. This is where President Zia was staying. As soon as they entered inside, the attackers attacked the circuit house with hand rockets. This was followed by attacks with grenades, machine guns and rockets. Meanwhile, President Zia came out of a room and asked the attackers in Bengali language – what do you want? Then one of the attackers started firing on Jia with a machine gun. Jia died on the spot. Within 20 minutes a soldier of Bangladesh was killed by the soldiers of his own army. Zia was the second president after Sheikh Mujib Ur Rahman to be assassinated.

On one hand, Henry Wells of New York left the house with his car, while on the other, Ebling Thomas came out of the house with his bicycle. Both did not know that an accident was going to happen to them, due to which their name would be written in history. Henry’s car became uncontrollable and collided with Thomas’s bicycle coming from the front. Thomas fractured his leg in the collision.

On this day in 1889, at the Paris Fashion Show, Hermini Kedel of France introduced the modern bra. Earlier women used to wear corsets. They used a piece of soft wood, which was tied at the back at the waist with several strings. At the Paris Fashion Show, Kiddle split the corset into two pieces, and thus the modern bra began.

In 1914, Mary Phelps of New York made a bra with the help of 2 handkerchiefs and 1 ribbon. He also patented it and called it the backless bra. It was lighter, softer and more comfortable. After that there were many changes in bra according to the needs and comfort.
