Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on May 23 filed a petition in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court for issue of a new passport. His petition will be heard in the court today. After becoming an MP, he had surrendered his diplomatic passport. Now the Congress leader has pleaded for issuance of No Objection Certificate (NOC) for ordinary passports.

The petition filed on behalf of Rahul Gandhi states that the applicant is not a member of Parliament since March 2023. He surrendered his diplomatic passport. Now he is applying for a new ordinary passport. For this the petitioners are seeking permission and NOC from the court. The court had on December 19, 2015 granted bail to Gandhi and others in the case.

On this petition, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vaibhav Mehta has sought response from BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, the complainant in the National Herald case, on Rahul Gandhi’s application.

Why did Rahul Gandhi lose his Lok Sabha membership?
Before the Lok Sabha elections on 13 April 2019, during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi had said, ‘Modi is the surname of thieves. Why do all thieves have the surname Modi, be it Lalit Modi or Nirav Modi or Narendra Modi.’

After this, Surat West’s BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul. He said that Rahul Gandhi has called our entire society a thief and this is a defamation of our society.

In this case, the court of Surat had sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years imprisonment on March 23 at 12.30. However, he got bail after 27 minutes. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s membership of Parliament was canceled at around 2.30 pm on March 24. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from Wayanad, Kerala. The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a letter giving information about this. Rahul’s name has also been removed from the website of the Lok Sabha.

In fact, the Supreme Court had said in a judgment of 11 July 2013 that if any MP or MLA was found guilty in the lower court, he would be disqualified for membership of Parliament or Legislative Assembly. Under this rule, Rahul’s parliament membership has been cancelled.
