Captain Rohit Sharma heaped praise on centurion Shubman Gill after Bangladesh beat India by six runs in a Super 4 match of Asia Cup 2023 on Friday.

Gill scored a gritty century and fought hard for India in the dead rubber but didn’t get much support from the other end. He continued his brilliant form and completed 1000 ODI runs this year and was dismissed on 121 runs in the 44th over of the innings which shifted the game in Bangladesh’s favour.

Rohit talked highly of Gill and said the youngster is clear with his mindset and backs his game to score big.

“Gill’s hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

Rohit revealed that Gill takes part in every practice session be it an optional one and works really hard on his game.

“Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard, there’s no optional practice for Gill,” he added.

India, who have already reached the final of Asia Cup, rested Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for the Bangladesh clash to test their bench strength.

However, debutant Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Prasidh Krishna failed to impress.

Meanwhile, after the match, Rohit said that they wanted to give some game time to the players before the ODI World Cup.

“We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup,” Rohit said.

Axar Patel (42 off 34 balls) tried gamely to bring India back into the game with some lusty blows but the target stayed just beyond India’s grasp. He was dismissed in the penultimate over which ended India’s hopes.

The Indian skipper also lauded the batting efforts of Axar and said he showed a lot of character with the bat.

“Axar batted brilliantly but couldn’t finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers,” Rohit said.
