Patients grappling with the discomfort of frozen shoulder, often experience issues that significantly impact one’s quality of life. Understanding the causes, recognizing symptoms, and implementing effective strategies for management are crucial steps towards regaining mobility.

Understanding Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, clinically known as adhesive capsulitis, is a debilitating condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. The condition progresses through three distinct stages—pain, stiffness, and resolution. The exact cause remains elusive, but factors such as age, diabetes, and previous shoulder injuries, cold exposure are common contributors.

Risk Factors

Several factors can contribute to the development of frozen shoulder. Age is a primary factor, with individuals over 40 being more susceptible. Those with diabetes face an elevated risk, and previous shoulder injuries or surgeries can trigger the condition. Additionally, covid vaccine, autoimmune diseases and prolonged immobility due to other health issues increases vulnerability.

Identifying Symptoms

Recognising the symptoms of frozen shoulder is paramount for early intervention. Patients typically experience a gradual onset of pain, often radiating down the arm. Stiffness progresses, limiting the range of motion, and daily activities become challenging. Identifying these symptoms early allows for a proactive approach to management.

Strategies for Management

Engaging in a targeted physical therapy regimen is pivotal in managing frozen shoulder. Exercises are employed to improve flexibility and strengthen shoulder muscles. This approach helps break down adhesions within the joint, gradually restoring range of motion.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroid injections may be prescribed to alleviate pain and inflammation. These medications play a supportive role in conjunction with other therapeutic measures.

Alternating between heat and ice applications can provide relief. Heat helps relax the muscles, while cold packs reduce inflammation. This combination is effective in managing pain and promoting flexibility.

  • Joint Distension and Hydrodilatation

In cases of severe stiffness, joint distension or hydrodilatation, a procedure involving the injection of sterile water into the joint capsule, may be considered. This can help stretch the capsule and improve range of motion.

While frozen shoulder presents a formidable challenge, a comprehensive and personalized approach to management make a significant difference. Seeking timely medical advice and adhering to a prescribed treatment plan are vital steps on the road to recovery from frozen shoulder.

Arthroscopic release of adhesion can be done, which help in good and fast recovery.
