TELANGANA ELECTION KEY ISSUES 2023: WHAT MATTERS TO VOTERS?

Several issues are prominent in this election including welfare plans, state debt and rebel MLAs. All the parties are trying to get voters by announcing welfare plans including better pensions, jobless benefits, insurance, and jobs with the state government. All the major parties—BRS, Congress, and those who didn’t get tickets—have to deal with this.

In the upcoming poll, the BRS faces a stiff challenge from the opposition Congress and the BJP. However, BRS has announced its candidates before anyone else and has gained the advantage. The party rebels, who have not got tickets, are expected to work against the ruling party before the polls.

TELANGANA 2018 RESULTS

In the last assembly election to the 119-member house, the KCR’s BRS won a landslide with 88 seats garnering 46.87% votes followed by the Congress 21, AIMIM 7, the TDP 2 and the BJP 1.

MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES AND ALLIANCES

Telangana is currently under the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly Telangana Rashtra Samithi). Congress is the major opposition party while the BJP is looking to establish itself as one of the key parties in the state.

The BJP is trying hard to emerge as the main challenger to the ruling BRS. Amit Shah will be visiting the state on October 27 while Yogi Adityanath will be coming in the last week of October.

The BRS is banking on its welfare and developmental schemes to perform a hat trick, the BJP intends to ride on the anti-incumbency and has accused the KCR family of corruption. The Congress is hoping to repeat its party’s spectacular win in neighbouring Karnataka.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e Ittehadul Muslimeen is planning to contest in at least nine seats in Hyderabad apart from fighting in Adilabad and Nizamabad districts. The party holds considerable influence among the Muslim voters.

KEY CONTESTS AND BATTLEGROUND CONSTITUENCIES

The Telangana assembly polls are expected to be an intriguing political battle with significant attention on key constituencies including Gajwel, Kamareddy, and Sircilla.

Some of the prominent seats in Telangana assembly elections are:

  • Gajwel: Located about 55 km from Hyderabad, BJP legislator Eatala Rajender is set to take on Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao in the Gajwel constituency in the assembly polls. The seat holds a special place in Telangana politics, as it has been the stronghold of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, also known as KCR.
  • Kamareddy: BJP’s K Venkata Ramana Reddy will contest against the chief minister in the Kamareddy constituency, which is the other seat being fought by K Chandrashekar Rao. The constituency is is currently represented by Gampa Govardhan of the BRS, a five-time legislator since 1994.
  • Sircilla: Rani Rudrama Reddy was fielded against BRS working president and KCR’s son KT Rama Rao in Sircilla.
  • Goshamahal: Sitting BJP legislator T Raja Singh, whose suspension was recently revoked, will contest from the Goshamahal segment in the city, his present constituency. In August last year, Raja Singh was suspended from the party following his alleged controversial remarks against “Islam and Prophet Mohammed” in a video which was later pulled down.
