swain: Police Seek Court Nod For Polygraph Test On Fake Doctor Swain | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police on Tuesday sought a court’s permission to conduct a lie detector test on Ramesh Swainwho was arrested last month for allegedly posing as a doctor and marrying several women in Odisha and outside the state and cheating them.
“We took Swain on five-day, three-day and five-day police remands in three phases. His latest remand ended on Tuesday. But he never cooperated with us during the custodial interrogation. To elicit the truth, we will subject him to a polygraph test,” a senior police officer said.
Swain (66) was arrested on February 14 here for marrying at least 18 women and defrauding them of lakhs of rupees. Besides, he was allegedly involved in several other types of frauds in and outside the state.
The police have been struggling to trace his properties and accomplices. During interrogation, Swain insisted he was innocent and did not cheat anyone. Though the police arrested Swain’s sister Rashmita Beura for allegedly abetting his crimes, the cops are yet to lay their hands on some others, who were part of the gang.
Police strongly suspect the connivance of Swain’s second wife, who is a doctor in Jharkhand, and Beura’s husband in the fraud. But both of them are still on the run.
Recently, the commissionerate police circulated photos and other details of Swain to their counterparts in other states to know about his crime history. Police sources said Swain was arrested by Kerala Police in 2006 for allegedly duping several banks to the tune of more than Rs 1 crore by producing 128 forged credit cards, forged identity cards and salary certificates. He was arrested by Hyderabad police in 2010 for allegedly collecting Rs 2 crore from several students, promising them to provide admission in medical colleges.
Swain not just took money from women after marrying them, he was involved in several other types of frauds. He took money from people on the pretext of giving them jobs and MBBS seats in medical colleges. He tricked people by introducing himself as a doctor, sometimes a senior official of the Union health ministry and Medical Council of India (MCI), police said.
