On 27 January 2022, Lokesh organized a screening of a BBC documentary on the Gujarat riots in the Delhi University campus. On this, on February 16, a show cause notice was issued to Lokesh Chugh by the university.

Delhi University (DU) suspended PhD scholar and Congress student leader Lokesh Chugh for a year for holding a screening of a BBC documentary on the campus.

Lokesh challenged the university’s order in a Delhi court. The court had quashed the order of the university.

Now DU has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against that court order.

The case is being heard by a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Najmi Waziri.

The bench issued notice to Chugh on the appeal of the university in the matter and sought his response. The next hearing in the case will be on September 14.

University sent show cause notice
On 27 January 2022, Lokesh organized a screening of a BBC documentary on the Gujarat riots in the Delhi University campus. On this, on February 16, a show cause notice was issued to Lokesh Chugh by the university.

On March 10, 2023, Lokesh Chugh received a memorandum from the University Registrar. In which it was told that he was suspended for a year. The court had filed a petition in a court challenging the show cause notice received from the university and the order banning the giving of the exam.

During the hearing on this petition, Delhi University said in the court – Screening of documentaries in the campus is indiscipline. Instead of focusing on his research, Chugh is doing politics in the campus. This will affect other students as well.

After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the single bench of the court quashed the order banning Chugh from giving the exam. Now the university has challenged that decision of the court in the High Court.

The first episode of the documentary was telecast on 17 January
The BBC released the first episode of The Modi Question, a documentary on the Gujarat riots, on YouTube on 17 January. The second episode was to release on January 24. Even before this, the central government removed the first episode from YouTube.

The Government of India has termed the documentary as propaganda against Prime Minister Modi and the country. Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said that we do not know what is the agenda behind the documentary, but it is not fair. This is propaganda against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
