Sushmita Sen recalled an incident from the time when she had to navigate through a 7-course meal with important dignitaries.

Sushmita Sen has carved her niche as an accomplished actress. She is celebrated for her remarkable talent and offbeat roles. The former Miss Universe winner returned to the screens with the thriller series Aarya, in June 2020, and marked a significant milestone, impressing both audiences and critics with her compelling and power-packed performance. Recalling about her Miss Universe journey, Sushmita Sen recalled how she learnt table manners after her triumph at the beauty pageant.

Speaking with Curly Tales, Sushmita shared an incident from her life when she was sent to Mexico for an official dinner as a guest of honour and where she found herself seated at the head of the table, with 20 men surrounding her and with bare minimum skills in the English language. She shared, “I’m at the head of the table, I’m 18 years old, I barely speak English. I’m getting it together at that point and Barbara, my travel manager sitting to my right and thereafter beyond Barbara are all men. I’m starving, I’m smiling at my travel manager saying ‘I’m very hungry’. Then I bend over like ‘I’m very hungry Barbara.’ She’s like ‘So are they and you’re the chief guest, you need to start.’”

Continuing her story, Sushmita Sen revealed that the tourism minister of Mexico, who was sitting on her left helped her to go about the 7-course meal. This experience compelled her to equip herself with table etiquette, “This is when I went to Barbra and I came back to Miss Universe organisation and I said I need to learn because I felt very out of place and I don’t want to feel like this again so they…”

Talking about an important tip that her etiquette teacher told her about ‘eating before going out and then carrying oneself with grace while dining’, Sushmita Sen stated, “One of the things I learnt from her was, ‘Pet bhar kar kha kar jaao ghar se (Eat well at home and then go for an official dinner), so that you do not have the urge to eat at the dinner table and you can elegantly say, ‘No more, thank you’, and they will assume you follow a strict diet.”

Sushmita Sen’s Aarya inaugural season garnered recognition with a nomination for the Best Drama Series at the International Emmy Awards, solidifying its critical acclaim.

Created and co-directed by filmmaker Ram Madhvani and co-produced by Amita Madhvani, Ram Madhvani Films, and Endemol Shine India, Aarya boasts an ensemble cast, featuring Sushmita Sen, Ila Arun, Sikandar Kher, Indraneil Sengupta, Vikas Kumar, among others.
