Sunny Deol Says Bollywood Was Against Gadar When It Was Released

New Delhi: Sunny Deol, who is gearing up for the release of ‘Gadar 2’ – the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar, recently spoke about the difficulties he faced while releasing the 2001 hit also starring Ameesha Patel.

Sunny and Ameesha appeared on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ for the film’s promotion. Kapil asked the actor on his emotions ahead of his film’s release, Sunny said in Punjabi, “There is excitement but also nervousness. When the film had released then, everyone in the industry… (gestured thumbs down). But the way the audiences pulled it up, everyone just changed.”

He then added, “Jab Gadar – Ek Prem Katha lagi, tab humein nahin pata tha ki yeh film gadar machayegi. People used to say, ‘Yeh Punjabi film hai. Isse Hindi mein dub karo’. Some distributors said, ‘Main toh nahin kharidunga yeh film’. So we did face a lot of issues. But people liked the film so much that they made everyone’s mouth shut! Unhone hi humein himmat di hai ki hum part 2 banayein.”

The actor also spoke about the iconic ‘handpump scene’ in the first edition of ‘Gadar’ where Sunny uproots a hand pump in anger during a face-off with Amrish Puri.

Shedding some light on the emotions that he felt while bringing this scene to life, Sunny shared, “It’s not about a person uprooting a hand pump; it’s about an emotional journey where one finds strength in the love and support of his family.”

“When a person is emotionally trapped, surrounded by his family on all sides, he would take such a step to save his children and wife from a difficult situation. In those moments, the divine essence of Waheguru dwells within us, guiding our actions. And that’s how the scene came into the picture and became an audience-adored scene of all time,” the senior actor said.

‘Gadar 2’, directed by Anil Sharma, is set to hit theaters on August 11, where it will face competition from Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 at the box office.
