A court in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru on Tuesday issued summons in a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar and the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). In fact, Karnataka BJP secretary S Keshav Prasad had complained that the Congress made false claims in the advertisements, which tarnished the BJP’s image.

He said in the complaint – Congress had given advertisements in major newspapers on May 5 before the elections. In these, the Congress claimed that the BJP government takes 40% commission and has looted 1.5 lakh crores in the last 4 years. These claims of the Congress are baseless, prejudiced and defamatory.

Court took cognizance under sections 499 and 500
The summons were issued by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Bengaluru. The court has taken cognizance of the matter under IPC sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) and fixed July 27 for recording the opening statement. This special court deals with the criminal cases of sitting and former MPs and MLAs.

Won the election by accusing the BJP government of taking 40% commission
Before the Karnataka elections, the Congress accused the BJP government of taking 40% commission. The Congress had raised this issue prominently in its election campaign. Rahul Gandhi had said in a rally that when the Prime Minister talks about corruption, then Karnataka’s leaders who take 40% commission stand on his stage. BJP likes the number 40. This time you people will give them 40 seats.

Priyanka had also called the BJP government of Karnataka as a government with 40% commission. He had said that the BJP government shamelessly and mercilessly looted the public. Many people also wrote letters to the Prime Minister regarding the corruption of the government here, but the PM remained silent. The Congress got a lot of benefit from this campaign in the elections.

Contractor committed suicide alleging 40% commission

Karnataka civil contractor Santosh Patil committed suicide on 11 April 2022. He had sent a WhatsApp message to his friends before the suicide. In this, he had said that ‘Eshwarappa, a minister in the BJP government of Karnataka, is responsible for my death. They should be punished. I request PM, CM and Yeddyurappa to take care of my family.

Santosh Patil had called Eshwarappa, a senior BJP leader and then Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj corrupt several times before the suicide and had also complained about him to PM Narendra Modi. Later an FIR was lodged against Eshwarappa and he had to resign. Although the police gave him a clean chit.
