Suicide Shadow On Board Exams | Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: The suicides of two students cast a tragic shadow on Tuesday on the conduct of the Class X and XII state board examinations, which were being held after a pause of two years because of the ongoing pandemic.
In Abhayapuri in Bongaigaon district, a Class X board examinee died by suicide on Monday night. Though police are yet to confirm the reason behind the death, locals said exam-related stress could be a possible trigger. The student hung himself. In another incident in Tezpur, a Class XII student died by suicide. He was a student of Darrang College and family members said he was a meritorious student.
A senior police officer in Tezpur said probe is on to ascertain the cause of the death. “Usually when there is a tendency to die by suicide before exams it is because of stress,” he said. The incident came to light on Tuesday morning.
In another incident, a proxy candidate was nabbed by the police in Balikuri Higher Secondary School in lower Assam’s Barpeta district. The student said he was sent to appear in the matric examination in place of a registered candidate. “I have not taken a single penny but the headmaster of another school took the money. The principal caught me after half-an-hour of the commencement of the exam,” he admitted.
In Kalain Higher Secondary School centre in Barak Valley’s Cachar district also a proxy matric candidate was apprehended.
Overall, the first day papers went off smoothly with a high turnout of candidates. Board of Secondary Education Assam (Seba) controller of examinations, NJ Sarmah |said 97% of the 4.31 lakh registered candidates for the Class X boards appeared. “In the Covid-induced situation, 97% turnout was quite satisfactory,” he said.
The Class XII boards were held peacefully without reports of any untoward incident, said Assam Higher Secondary Education Council controller of examination, Pankaj Borthakur.
