Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that Sudha Murty, an esteemed Indian educator, author, and former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, has been appointed to the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi made this announcement through a post on the social media platform X (formerly X) on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” he wrote on the microblogging site.

Sudha Murty, wife of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, is an accomplished author in both Kannada and English, having written novels, technical literature, and travel accounts. She is the mother of venture capitalist Akshata Murty, who is married to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Currently, Murty is not in India; she expressed her gratitude to PM Modi for the nomination, stating, “It’s a big Women’s Day gift to me. It’s a new responsibility to work for the country.”
Born on August 19, 1950, in Shiggaon, Karnataka, Sudha Murty began her career as a computer scientist and engineer. Eventually, she ended up becoming the first female engineer hired at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco).
Murty’s philanthropic endeavours are extensive. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, she is the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, which addresses issues such as poverty, healthcare, and sanitation. Through the foundation, she has constructed numerous homes in flood-affected regions, established libraries in schools, and supported the construction of public toilets.
Her impact extends globally, as she established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
