During the hockey match in Commonwealth Games, Gurjit Kaur of Punjab was named in every match. Gurjeet could not visit her parents at her home in the village as there was a paucity of money and resources.

Gurjeet’s father Satnam Singh and mother Harjinder say that after coming out of the border village, the daughter became an international hockey player. Sadly, when he started playing there was no sports stadium in the village. There were no good schools either. Father Satnam Singh used to take Gurjit and his sister Pradeep Kaur to school every day 12 km away from the village. Not only this, he also used to go on a bicycle every afternoon in the scorching sun. At the same time, his grandfather Makhan Singh used to play Kabaddi in 1960. He himself used to play Kabaddi in 1985.

Gurjit Kaur was born on 25 October 1995 to farmer Satnam Singh in Miadiya Kalan village of Ajnala’s border area. Elder sister Pradeep Kaur is also a national player and coach of hockey. Brother plays Kabaddi. Gurjeet’s father wished that daughters should make their mark in hockey with good education in the world.

Got admission in Sundar Model School for better education. At the same time, due to the financial condition of the house, the father used to go 12 km away to drop him by bicycle and used to wait there till the school was over. In 2006, it was decided to send him to study in 6th class hostel in Kairon village of Tarn Taran, 70 km from Amritsar. There is one in the women’s hockey nursery in Kairon village. Started playing hockey here with elder sister Pradeep Kaur. Both the sisters were coached by Sharanjit Singh under whose tutelage they learned hockey.

  • Selection in Indian women’s junior hockey in 2012 at the age of 17.
  • Selection in Senior Women’s Hockey Team in 2014.
  • Played in Senior National Camp in 2017.
  • She is the only player who became a permanent member of the hockey team in 2017.
  • Played test series in Canada in March 2017. Represented Hockey World League Round-2 in April and Hockey World League Semi-Final in July.
  • He took India to the final of hockey after 20 years by scoring a goal in the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta. India won the silver medal.
  • Good performance in Asian, Commonwealth, London World Cup.
  • Recently, the Punjab Government conferred the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award.
  • Gurjit Kaur works as a Clerk in Allahabad Railway. The family wishes that Gurjit should be given the post of DSP in Punjab Police.
  • Gurjit also worked with Holland coach Toon Spemann to hone his drag flick skills.
