SilverLine: Social impact study to be conducted in Kannur | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has issued notification for conducting a social impact assessment ahead of land acquisition in Kannur district for the proposed SilverLine project.
Kannur district has been selected since the alignment process has been completed in this district. As per the notification, the social impact assessment will be completed in 100 days. The state government has identified 106.2 hectare for the project in this district.
The district will have 61.7km stretch of SilverLine out of the total 530km across the state. The assessment will cover 19 villages in Kannur, Payyanur and Thalassery taluks.
The social impact study will cover the number of families that will have to be rehabilitated, the area of government and private land that will have to be acquired, the number of houses and buildings that will have to be acquired, the size of land covering the project in this district, etc, will be assessed.
The cost required for the rehabilitation will also be worked out as part of this study. It would also look into the difficulties people will have to face with the acquisition of their land or properties and how their livelihood will be affected.
It is interesting to note that the state government has decided to begin the social impact study amidst all the opposition against this project, from Kannur district itself, which is considered as the Marxist heartland and home turf of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The state government urged the Centre to provide its share for the project as budget allocation in the ensuing Union Budget. Both chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and finance minister KN Balagopal made this request to Union finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman.
