Shubho Bijoya 2022 Wishes: Today is the last day of this year’s Durga Puja. The day is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami, which is considered the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga killed demon king Mahishasura on this day to rid the universe of his torture.
What Happens On Vijaya Dashami?
Vijaya Dashami marks the end of the Durga Puja festival. It is believed Goddess Durga returns to her abode on the day after slaying Mahishasura. At all pandals, women come in the morning dressed in the traditional white saree with red borders. They perform ‘Devi Baran’, bidding farewell to the Goddess. An aarti happens next, and women apply sindoor on the forehead and feet of the idol.
They also apply vermillion on each other’s forehead, and younger ones on the elder women’s feet. This is followed by ‘Sindoor Khela’ when the women smear each other’s faces with vermillion.
A ‘ghat visarjan’ is performed by the priest, officially marking the end of the Puja.
In the evening, Goddess Durga and Her children are taken in a procession for visarjan or immersion in a water body, which indicates her return to Mount Kailash.
While the departure of the Mother Goddess is an emotional moment for many, it is also a time for merriment as She leaves after slaying the demon. The occassion is celebrated with hugs among men and distribution of sweets. In fact, the festivities continue in Bengal as the period until Diwali is celebrated as ‘Bijoya’. During this time, people greet each other ‘Shubho Bijoya’ on meeting, and the younger ones touch the feet of elder ones, while men do a ‘kolakuli (hug)’.
‘Bijoya’: History And Importance
The culmination of Durga Puja festival also means the end of Mahishasura and his “evil era”. Hence, an auspicious period of ‘Bijoya’, which literally means ‘victory’, begins with the departure of Durga, in celebration of the win of good over evil. This celebration begins right after the visarjan, or immersion, of the idol and goes on until Diwali.
Traditionally, Bengali households have seen friends and relatives visiting each other to meet and exchange ‘Shubho Bijoya’ greetings. In olden times, people would even visit strangers’ houses. A highlight of such visits is a custom that mandates all guests must be offered something sweet to eat. For women, it used to be a busy time as they were required to keep the house stocked with sweets for the steady stream of guests.
The tradition continues, albeit on a smaller scale.
