The coalition government in Maharashtra has suffered a major setback. The Special PMLA Court has rejected the bail of Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh, due to which both of them will not be able to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections to be held tomorrow. This decision, which came just before the Rajya Sabha elections, assumes significance because every vote will be counted and the absence of these two ministers can have a big impact on the decision.

Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik and former state home minister Anil Deshmukh are in jail since their arrest in a money laundering case. Both are members of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is part of the Shiv Sena-led alliance with the Congress.

Both of them had appealed for one-day bail to cast their vote in the Rajya Sabha elections on Friday, but the court agreed with the ED that prisoners do not have voting rights.

After 24 years, Rajya Sabha elections came in Maharashtra

This will be the first time in more than 24 years that elections to the Rajya Sabha will be held in the state. The last such election was held in 1998, where Congress candidate Ram Pradhan was defeated despite having sufficient numbers in favor of the party. In 1998, elections were held according to the secret ballot system, while this time voters (MLAs) would have to show the party whip before casting their ballot.

Rajya Sabha elections to be held on June 10

  • A total of 57 seats were to be held in 15 states.
  • On the last day of withdrawal of nominations, 41 members were elected unopposed.
  • Now voting for 16 seats of Rajya Sabha will be held on June 10.
  • These include Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana and Karnataka.

Devendra Fadnavis recovered from Corona
Elections are to be held for six Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra. This is the first time in the last 20 years that there will be a contest between seven candidates in the state. At the same time, the good news for the opposition BJP is that the corona report of BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has come negative. That means they can vote tomorrow.

These are the contenders for Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra
Shiv Sena has fielded two candidates Sanjay Raut and Sanjay Pawar. The opposition BJP has fielded three candidates- Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik. Ruling alliance partners NCP and Congress have nominated one candidate each, Praful Patel and Imran Pratapgarhi.

What is the mathematics of Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra

  • A candidate needs 42 votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat in Maharashtra.
  • The Shiv Sena-led Mahavikas Aghadi has the numbers to win three out of six Rajya Sabha seats for which 288 MLAs will vote.
  • The BJP, which had 106 members in the assembly, may win two on its own, but has fielded a third candidate for the sixth seat between BJP’s Dhananjay Mahadik and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Pawar.
  • The BJP has 22 additional votes and claims to have the support of seven independent MLAs.
  • She is trying to bridge the gap by garnering the support of 13 more. Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress have sent their MLAs to the resort to prevent any betrayal and cross voting.
  • The coalition has 26 additional votes and needs 16 votes to win the sixth seat.
  • The BJP has also separated its members, with independent MLAs reaching out to former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for support.
  • Small parties and independents have 29 MLAs. All these will play a big role in the victory.
