Sharjeel Imam gets bail in Jamia violence case: Will remain in jail for conspiracy of Delhi riots

Sharjeel is in jail since January 2020.

A Delhi court has acquitted Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the 2019 Jamia Millia Islamia University violence case. However, Sharjeel will still have to remain in jail. He is also an accused in the conspiracy case of Delhi riots. Many more FIRs are also registered against him. Whereas, Tanha is out of jail on bail.

Sharjeel has also got bail in the case of treason
Four months ago, a Delhi court granted bail to Sharjeel Imam on a personal bond of Rs 30,000 in a sedition case. In this, he was accused of making inflammatory speeches, which led to violence in Jamia Nagar area in 2019.

The arrest took place in January 2020
Imam is lodged in Tihar Jail for three years. Sharjeel Imam came into the limelight after the video of the statement surfaced. He was then accused in several cases related to the violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Sharjeel was arrested in January 2020 from Bihar in another case related to hate speech and sedition.

Imam’s speech
In his speech, the Imam said that Assam should be separated from India. If we want to help Assam, we have to block the way for Indian army and supplies to Assam. ‘Chicken neck’ belongs to Muslims. Chicken Neck is a 22 km highway, which connects the northeastern states to the rest of the country.

So far 1153 people have been made accused
Many people including Sharjeel Imam, Amar Khalid, Khalid Saifi have been arrested under the Anti Terror Act UAPA for being the master mind of the riots in North-East Delhi in February 2020. Over 750 cases were registered in connection with the Northeast Delhi violence. About 53 people were killed and many were injured in this violence. More than 250 charge sheets have been filed so far in cases related to the riots. Of these, 1,153 people have been made accused.
