After the tiffin bomb was found near Chandigarh’s Hi-tech Model Burail Jail, the administration has decided to tighten the security of the jail. Many dangerous terrorists associated with Babbar Khalsa terrorist organization are imprisoned here. Therefore, 45 high resolution CCTV cameras will be installed within 14 acres of Burail Jail.

Under Vehicle Security System (UVSS) will also be installed. Through this, any object hidden on the floor of any vehicle can be seen. The floor of a vehicle moving at a speed of 30 km per hour can also be checked with this modern system. This type of UVSS exists in only a few prisons in the country. It consists of a camera and automatic registration recording system.

Arrangements to stop heavy vehicles at entry

Apart from these, there is also a plan to install boom barriers at the entry gate to prevent heavy vehicles up to 9 tonnes. This boom barrier will also have the ability to stop a fast approaching heavy vehicle. At present, there is a multi-layer barrier of iron in the Burail Jail. At present, the Chandigarh Administration has floated tenders for the purchase of CCTV cameras and UVSS. Special boom barrier will also be procured soon. The Home Secretary has approved this purchase.

According to the information received, the cost of high-resolution CCTV cameras will cost 22 to 23 lakh rupees. At the same time, the cost of UVSS has been estimated at Rs 43 lakh. The tender for boom barrier will also be floated soon. After the RDX was found near the jail wall, IG (Prisons) Deepak Purohit had held several meetings regarding the security arrangements, under which these measures were considered and a plan was also made to implement them.

Panic increased due to bad atmosphere in Punjab

At present the atmosphere in Punjab is bad. There have been many terrorist incidents. There has been a blast in the court premises. Gang wars have also increased. RDX has been found near the wall of Chandigarh Burail Jail. There has been an RPG attack on the Intelligence Headquarters building in Mohali. Reports of a possible terror attack on the entire jails of Punjab have increased the threat even more. Nabha jail has also been broken in November 2016. In view of all this, Chandigarh has decided to increase the security of its only jail.

Jail break happened in 2004

Jail break took place in January 2004 in Hitech Burail Jail. Khalistani terrorists Jagtar Singh Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh Bhiora, convicted in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, had escaped with a 94 feet long tunnel along with one Devi Singh. Except Devi Singh, all the three terrorists were caught. Recently, a mobile phone was recovered from a prisoner named Manjit Singh lodged in barrack number 12, accused in several murders. It also had a SIM card in it. The jail administration has increased the checking of prisoners since this incident.
