SC order on reservation in NEET-PG: 27% reservation for OBC and 10% for EWS intact, paving the way for the recruitment of 50 thousand MBBS doctors

The Supreme Court has finally given its verdict on Friday on the controversy regarding reservation in NEET-PG. The court has upheld the 10% quota for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) and 27% for OBC. Along with this, the court has asked to start counseling for UG and PG courses immediately.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna allowed Rs 8 lakh to be considered as the income criteria for identification of EWS category students in this year’s counseling. A hearing has been kept in the third week of March to identify who will come under EWS reservation and EWS category. The final decision regarding admission will rest with the Supreme Court.

EWS norms will change after the new rule
According to the court, this year admission will be given on the basis of the old rules. According to the new rule, the annual income of 10 lakhs was recognized in the EWS category, but students from families with more than five acres of agricultural land have been excluded from EWS, regardless of their annual income, but now in this case But there will be a hearing again.

Earlier in the hearing held last week, the government had told the court that the criteria to identify EWS would be implemented in this academic session. The government had said that at a time when the process of admission of NEET students is going on, changing the rules will create confusion. The government had said that the changed rules could be implemented from next year.

what is the matter
The court had sought a response from the government as to why it has been made the criteria for identification of EWS when the standard of annual income of less than 8 lakhs is valid for identification of creamy layer in OBCs. The court said that how can the same criteria be adopted for OBC and EWS categories, while there is no social and educational backwardness in EWS.

50 thousand doctors will be recruited
NEET-PG is a postgraduate exam by participating in which doctors take postgraduate level education. After clearing NEET-PG admission, about 50,000 doctors will be recruited into the healthcare workforce. During the third wave of Corona, the recruitment of doctors will bring great relief. Resident doctors across the country started a strike last month to protest the delay in admission to NEET-PG. The doctors called off their strike on December 31 after getting assurance from the government that admission would start soon.
