Two judges have raised questions on Chief Justice U U Lalit regarding the listing of the case in the Supreme Court. Criticizing the listing system, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka said during a hearing that the afternoon session is full of cases. Because of this, there is no time to decide. He attributed this to the new listing system.

What is the new listing system
In the new system implemented by Chief Justice UU Lalit, two shifts have been made for all 30 judges of the Supreme Court. Under this new arrangement, from Monday to Friday, they sit in 15 different benches to hear new cases and hear 60 cases every day.

All the judges in the three-judge bench had heard the old cases on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the first shift from 10.30 am to 1 pm. In those days, in the second shift of the afternoon, 30 cases were given to a two-judge bench, which was to be heard in two hours. That is, on an average, a case was to be disposed of in 4 minutes.

However, from Tuesday, the CJI had reduced the number of cases to 20 instead of 30, that is, now 20 cases will be heard in 120 minutes. After this, the judges hearing the cases said – whose case file has been read. About them the advocate should not expect that he will give time to read it again.

CJI has disposed of 5000 cases so far
According to media reports, since U U Lalit took over as the CJI on August 27, a total of more than 5,000 cases have been settled so far. These include more than 3500 miscellaneous matters, more than 250 regular hearing cases and over 1200 transfer petitions in 13 working days.

The listing system was introduced so that the pending cases of years old could be disposed of fast. According to the Supreme Court website, as of August 26, there were another 71,411 cases pending in the court. These included cases like Article 370, demonetisation, CAA, electoral bonds, UAPA and Sabarimala.
