Due to heavy snowfall, both the main strategic roads passing through Himachal have been closed for traffic. Apart from this, almost all the roads under the Public Works Department have been blocked. Heavy snowfall is continuing in the tribal and border areas of Himachal for the last 24 hours.

After the Meteorological Department’s warning, the Lahaul Spiti, Kinor and Chamba administrations have issued an alert in view of the possibility of snowfall. The Manali-Leh strategic road is already closed due to snowfall while now the Hindustan-Tibet road connecting Samdo border has also been closed beyond Reckong Peo.

Therefore, the road connectivity of Samdo border has been completely cut off. According to the information, there has been snowfall of 3 to 4 feet in Rohtang, Kunjam, Baralacha, Shinkula and Kugti passes. While 1 to 2 feet of snow has fallen in Pangi Kilar of Lahaul Spiti, Kinor and Chamba.

BRO 108 RCC officer Rajendra Katoch said that about one foot of snow has fallen at the BRO headquarters at Powari in Kinor. Due to snowfall, the road leading to Sumdo border is closed beyond Reckong Peo.

However, in the midst of snowfall, BRO workers and machines are continuously engaged in the snow removal campaign. It is expected that soon the road will be restored till the Sumdo border as soon as the weather clears up. Around 400 link roads under PW have been closed in Lahaul Spiti, Kinnor and Pangi Killar of Chamba.

PW’s Executive Engineer BS Negi told that the work of removing snow from the road will be started as soon as the weather opens. In the same tribal areas, electricity supply along with drinking water has been affected.
