Renowned fashion trailblazer Sabyasachi Mukherjee once again captivated the fashion world with his latest feat, bringing the essence of Bengal’s craftsmanship and diversity all the way to London’s Buckingham Palace. At the prestigious ‘Animal Ball 2023’, the designer crafted ‘Shola’ masks for King Charles III and Queen Camilla, reaffirming his position as a trendsetter. Known for his revivalist approach to Indian fashion, Sabyasachi has consistently showcased his deep-rooted connection to Indian heritage. This time, his sartorial choices set a new benchmark by shining a spotlight on Bengal’s artisanal legacy.
The Shola elephant masks, meticulously handcrafted using age-old techniques and materials, were the result of a collaboration between the Sabyasachi Art Foundation and master craftspeople from Bengal.
Taking to Instagram, the designer shared the story behind the masks worn by the British royalty, stating, “I like to tell hyper-local stories to the world in an attempt to create economic sustainability for heritage crafts and craftspeople.” These masks symbolise the significance of Bengal’s most cherished traditional crafts.
Sabyasachi’s journey has been filled with remarkable milestones, further cementing his position as a global fashion icon. After opening his store in New York’s West Village in 2022 and collaborating with H&M in 2021, his accomplishments continue to reach new heights.
