Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma showcased why he is rated as amongs the best white-ball cricketers in the world during the ICC World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan on October 11 (Wednesday), achieving a historic milestone. In a breathtaking performance, Rohit Sharma smashed the fastest century by an Indian batter in the history of the World Cup. Rohit reached this remarkable achievement by completing his century off just 63 balls, leaving spectators in awe at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. This brilliant innings set a new record in the World Cup history as he broke Kapil Dev’s record set in 1983.
The previous record for the fastest century by an Indian in a World Cup dated back to June 18, 1983 when Kapil Dev had achieved the feat by scoring a century in 72 balls. He had notched up that ton against Zimbabwe at the Nevill Ground in Turnbridge Wells. While he shattered several record during this innings including going past Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in international cricket, the most extraordinary one was going past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most hundreds in a World Cup.
While Tendulkar had smashed six tons in six World Cups, Rohit now has seven tons in his third World Cup, five of them coming in the 2019 edition alone.
