REPUBLIC DAY 2024: India gears up to celebrate its 75th Republic Day on January 26. This day marks the commemoration of the enactment of the Indian Constitution in 1950. Although India had achieved freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947, and observes the day as Independence Day and a distinct national holiday, the initial three years witnessed the governance predominantly guided by the Government of India Act of 1935.

Following the declaration of Independence, a constituent assembly, elected by provincial assemblies, embarked on the task of drafting a constitution to govern the newly independent nation. After a process spanning over two years, the Constitution of India was finalised, establishing the framework for the country’s independent democratic government. The date – January 26 was chosen as the official enactment date, paying homage to the Purna Swaraj (complete self-rule) declaration made by the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1930.

The adoption of the 1950 constitution officially designated the country as the Republic of India.
