The water level in Bhakra Dam has remained 25 feet below the danger level.

The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for rain in 9 districts of Punjab. In Punjab today rain may occur in Fazilka, Muktsar, Faridkot, Moga, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala and Amritsar. Early morning rains in some areas brought down the minimum temperature in the morning, but rains in Himachal have raised concerns about the Bhakra Dam.

As per the data released this morning, today’s water level in Bhakra Dam is 1655.75 feet. It is 1.09 feet more than the previous day. The inflow of water in Bhakra Dam has been recorded at 57549 cusecs, whereas only 40971 cusecs of water was released through turbines from Bhakra Dam. 12350 cusecs of water is being released from Bhakra to Nangal Dam in Nangal Hydal Canal, 10150 cusecs in Anandpur Sahib Hydal Canal, while 18600 cusecs of water is being released in Sutlej Darya.

There is a warning of heavy rains in Himachal in the coming 3 days, due to which the water level in Bhakra Dam is expected to rise by 1 to 2 feet daily. After this, it is estimated that the Bhakra Management Board may have to release water in a week to 15 days.

At the same time, after the breach in the Katthoonal canal, the water level in Tungpai drain has now receded. Water has receded from many areas like Ram Nagar, Sandhu Enclave etc., but the slums built around the drain are still in the grip of water.

The district administration has evacuated around 150 slum dwellers to a safer place. ACP North Davinder Khosa said that the situation and the water level in the drain are being monitored. If anything worrying happens, the rescue teams will immediately swing into action.
