NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the inquiries by the Centre and Punjab government into the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to the state on January 5 and set up a panel, headed by retired SC judge Justice Indu Malhotra, to probe into the matter.
The SC said the panel will inquire into causes of the security breach, persons responsible for the lapse and the future measures to be taken for preventing such security breaches of VVIPs.
“Such a sensitive issue relating to the security breach of PM cannot be left to one-sided inquiries by the Centre or the state government,” the SC said and stayed the proceedings before the inquiry committees set up by Punjab government and the Centre.
The SC added that the other members of the SC-appointed inquiry panel could be the NIA DG or his nominee not below the rank of IG, the DGPs of Chandigarh and Punjab, and the registrar general of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The SC also asked the HC registrar general to submit all records and documents collected by him on orders of the SC, to the inquiry panel.
