Punjab Governor replied to CM: Government’s assembly session is not legal; Violation of all four bill laws including Gurdwara Act amendment

Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit has replied to the letter from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for early signing of the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925. Governor Purohit has termed the special session called on June 19-20 as unconstitutional, while he has called the bills passed on two days a violation of the law.

The Governor replied to the CM that the meeting called on 19-20 was not under the law. All the four bills passed in this are in violation of the law. The Governor said that he would take the opinion of the Attorney General in this regard. Only then will he sign the bills passed.

Significantly, CM Bhagwant Mann had written a letter to the Governor demanding approval of the Amendment Act in the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925.

The Punjab government had amended the Gurdwara Act 1925 in this session. After which it was claimed that after this there will be free broadcast of Gurbani from Golden Temple.

The second bill was done regarding the chancellor of the universities of Punjab. In which it was said that now the chancellor of the universities will not be the governor but the chief minister.

The third bill was regarding the appointment of DGP in Punjab. In which it was said that now the panel for DGP will not be sent to UPSC. The state government will form a 7 member committee. She will decide on this.

The fourth bill was regarding the freezing of RDF funds by the central government. In which it was said that if the Center did not provide funds, the state government would go to the Supreme Court.

Resolution passed in Punjab Assembly against Center on RDF: Mann said – Gurbani will be aired free; CM will be chancellor instead of governor in universities

The proceedings of the second day of the special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly ended with the approval of 3 resolutions. During this, a resolution was passed against the Central Government for not releasing the Rural Development Fund (RDF). The Gurdwara Act 1925 amendment bill was also passed after opposition from the opposition.
