Punjab: Farmers against PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Ferozepur | Amritsar News – Times of India

CHABBA/AJNALA (AMRITSAR): Activists of farm unions Jamhuri Kisan Sabha (JKS) and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) held separate protests against PM Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Ferozepur on January 5.
The KMSC also rued the cancellation of their meeting with chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi which was scheduled for Tuesday. KMSC activists gathered at Chabba, near Amritsar, and burnt an effigy of Modi and also announced to protest against his visit to Punjab.
KMSC state general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher said presidents and secretaries of 18 zones of KMSC attended the January 3 meeting at Chabba. “We chalked out a strategy to get Modi’s January 5 Ferozepur rally cancelled,” he said, adding that they were prepared to implement their strategy and wouldn’t allow Modi to hold political rallies in Punjab unless he fulfilled their demands, including bringing a law to guarantee MSP to farmers, withdrawal of police cases against farmers, and justice in Lakhimpuri incident. When asked how would they not allow PM to hold the rally, he replied: “At least we will stage a peaceful protest.”
JKS state president Satnam Singh Ajnala said they held a protest in Ajnala and also burnt his effigy. While stating JKS was not part of the KMSC meeting held in Chabba, Satnam said: “We all protested Modi’s visit to Punjab; he is responsible for the deaths of over 700 farmers during their over year-long struggle. They added common people were not happy under Modi’s regime.”
Gurbachan Singh Chabba, state office secretary of KMSC, said the Punjab government had cancelled their meeting with CM Channi on January 4. Chabba said KMSC president Satnam Singh Pannun had received a letter from the director, department of agriculture and farmers welfare, informing them about the cancellation of the proposed meeting in Chandigarh.
