Punjab assembly elections: Congress ticket aspirant Daaman Bajwa to contest as independent candidate | Ludhiana News – Times of India

PATIALA: In a rebellion against the Congress, party leader Daaman Thind Bajwa who was denied ticket from Sunam assembly segment had now announced to file her nominations as an independent candidate from Sunam in case the party fails to replace the incumbent candidate.
The party has fielded Jaswinder Singh Dhiman, who is a nephew of Amargarh MLA Surjit Singh Dhiman. Daaman Bajwa who contested and lost the Sunam seat to AAP’s Aman Arora in 2017 assembly elections had then got 19.4 percent vote, whereas SAD (B) candidate Gobind Singh Longowal got 27.36 per cent vote share while the AAP’s Aman Arora won and got 46.86 per cent vote.
Daaman was backed by Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi who in December last year had addressed the gathering in Sunam in her support and said that the huge gathering had confirmed that Daaman she would win this time. Despite the denial of ticket this time, Daaman had kept her campaign escalated parallel to the party candidate.
“The Congress party high command has assured me to replace the incumbent candidate and would give a ticket to me but if the party fails to allot me the ticket in a day, I would contest as an independent and will file nominations by Tuesday”, said Daaman Bajwa.
“I had worked a lot at the ground for the party for the last five years. I was given a ticket by Rahul Gandhi last time who knew I may lose the seat in 2017 but will have to work to win in the next elections. For over last six months, I have been requesting the party to let me know if the party will reconsider on Sunam seat and want to give ticket to someone else and I would have not objected but it is not fair to announce the candidature at the eleventh hour despite knowing that I had worked a lot and gained stronghold. I would not have objected if the candidate would have been announced from Sunam constituency but giving ticket to an outsider only on the basis that the candidate is a relative of sitting MLA from other constituency cannot be tolerated. All the party surveys were against JS Dhiman who had entered Sunam constituency only after his name was announced as Congress candidate as he was not expecting the candidature. His only achievement is that he is nephew of Surjit Singh Dhiman”, she added.
JS Dhiman said: “My residence is in Dirba which is only seven kilometers away from Sunam. I belong to Punjab and Sunam is part of my state. Daaman Bajwa did not object when we were contesting from Dirba but now the bone of contention is the denial of ticket. I could not reach her out to convince but it is the party high command that decides on the ticket and can assure adjustments to such rebels”
