THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cutting across party lines, political leaders paid rich tributes to Congress leader P T Thomas who passed away on Wednesday. CM Pinarayi Vijayan remembered Thomas as a person who raised key issues in the assembly and outside, anchoring firmly on to his political convictions.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Thomas was a towering personality and a forward-looking and open-minded leader who was concerned about the environment. He added that Thomas was a deeply secular person who built bridges between all communities. Rahul who arrived at Kozhikode airport on a two-day trip to his constituency on Wednesday, cancelled his programmes and proceeded to Kochi.
KPCC president K Sudhakaran said PT was the progressive face of Congress in Kerala. “He scaled heights with the strength of his personality. He was a leader who dared to tell the world unsavoury truths,” he said.
Opposition leader VD Satheesan said Thomas was like an elder brother to him. “PT always stood on the side of the right. His stance on environment and women safety issues were exemplary,” he said.
Ramesh Chennithala remembered Thomas as a leader who was never ready to make compromises in his political conviction. “He had an inimitable ability to go deep into issues and present them forcefully,” Ramesh said.
CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said Thomas was a leader who admirably upheld high ideals in politics.
BJP state president K Surendran said Thomas’s untimely demise of was a huge loss to Kerala politics. Union minister V Muraleedharan said PT never swayed from his deep-rooted convictions.
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan termed Thomas as a vibrant and dedicated legislator.
Cardinal George Alencherry said people will always remember PT’s services for the betterment of the society. Baselios Thomas I, the Catholicos of the Jacobite Church also expressed condolences on behalf of the Church and himself.
