Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 657-acre, Rs 401 crore Deoghar airport. In addition, he also flagged off the IndiGo flight from Deoghar to Kolkata to take off from the new airport. The airport’s runway, which is 2,500 metres long, can accommodate the landing and takeoff of Airbus A320 aircraft. Modi laid the foundation stone of Deoghar airport on May 25, 2018. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, on the occasion, said the airport will be linked to Ranchi, Patna and Delhi in the days to come.
The new Deoghar airport is expected to increase connectivity in the region. Based on Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s statement the airport will have flights connecting it to other states like Kolkata, Patna and Delhi.

According to earlier statements made by officials, the airport is prepared to begin operations after two successful flight run trials. The low-cost airline IndiGo has declared that it will begin operating flights between Kolkata and Deoghar in Jharkhand on July 12. The airline announced in a statement that beginning on July 12, there will be four weekly flights between Deoghar and Kolkata.

The airport will offer aviation connectivity to Jharkhand, northern West Bengal, and south-eastern Bihar, and is the second of international standards in Jharkhand after the Birsa Munda international airport in Ranchi.
