Plans Afoot To Widen Busy Coimbatore Bypass | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: The ministry of road transport and highways has called for bids from consultants to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to widen the Coimbatore bypass.
The consultant will prepare DPR to convert the 26.1km two-lane stretch between Neelambur and Madukkarai into four-lane, and study the technical and financial viability of the project.
While the bypass was widened by the central government in 2010 at a cost of 850 crore between Chengapalli and Walayar, the Neelambur-Madukkarai stretch was left out.
Commuters say widening the bypass will solve daily traffic congestion. Absence of dividers make the stretch more dangerous. With the number of road users increasing with fast development taking place along the stretch, several junctions have turned into traffic bottlenecks.
Residents have welcomed the decision to develop the road. Some of them took to social media on seeing the tender invitation to thank the central government. They have urged the government to take up the work at the earliest.
C M Jayaraman, president of Citizen Voice Coimbatore, said it is long-awaited. “There was a proposal to construct a ring road, but it was kept in cold storage. The road widening proposal should not end up like that,” he said.
Jayaraman urged the state and the central government to conduct public hearing so that people will have an opportunity to express their views. “Suitable suggestions can be taken and included while the detailed project report is prepared,” he added.
