Finally, the Surat Sessions Court dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s petition in the defamation case. What will happen now? Will Rahul Gandhi be arrested? No. At present, the option of going to the High Court is open to him. But for this he has to go in appeal before 23rd April. Because he has got bail till 23 only. It is not known when the appeal will go.

Party leader Jairam Ramesh says that he will go to the High Court on 21 April. Yes, if the High Court and the Supreme Court also do not acquit them, then they will surely face the danger of arrest. If no court acquits him, he will not be able to contest elections for six years after serving two years, that is, eight years in total.

The question arises that what does Rahul Gandhi himself want? Political observers say that even the BJP itself would not want Rahul Gandhi to go to jail and get a chance to garner any kind of sympathy. Anyway, BJP leaders have been indicating in their statements that Rahul Gandhi should go in appeal. There are courts in the country so who can stop them from going there! The Congress and Rahul Gandhi want the matter to be dragged on as long as possible because they see their own political interest in this far-reaching matter.

The picture is of April 3, when Rahul Gandhi filed a petition against the sentence in Surat court. Then his sister Priyanka was also present with him.

Whether there will be punishment or not, it depends on the court only, but if there is a delay in this litigation and if the Election Commission conducts by-elections in Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency, then all the ways to restore his MP will be closed. In true sense the MP cannot be reinstated even now, until he is acquitted. Once convicted, Rahul will not be able to contest the Lok Sabha elections not only in 2024 but also in 2029.

Now the question is, what will happen to the Congress if Rahul does not contest the elections? Politically, Rahul Gandhi does not mind even if he does not contest the elections. He is the indirect surveyor of the party. After serving the sentence of two years, he can at least do election campaign. Maybe then they would get more sympathy. By the way, from the day the lower court sentenced him, till now the entire Congress has not done anything that could create a massive wave of sympathy for Rahul and the Congress. After protesting for a day or two, people forgot and all the Congressmen too.

Actually, Congress does not know how to capitalize on issues or matters. If the BJP was in the opposition and this issue was with it, then what a wave, a storm would have started blowing across the country. The issue would have been kept hot till the 2024 elections and she would have reaped its benefits in the elections. In fact, the Congress has forgotten the role of the opposition while being in power for years. Neither did she do any big movement, nor was she able to take issues like Adani to the public in true sense.
