A woman from Odisha became so helpless that she had to bury her husband alone. The case is of Badnai village in Keonjhar district, where the husband of a tribal woman died due to illness. She sought help from the villagers for the last rites of her husband but no one helped her.
The woman did not even have money for the last rites of her husband, she took 1500 rupees from someone and performed the last rites of her husband.

A woman named Pati Munda, a resident of Badnai village, lived with her husband nephew Munda. The couple had no children. Bhanja Munda was suffering from unknown disease. As his condition worsened, Pati took him to Champua Hospital. But the condition did not improve and the doctor referred him to the district headquarters hospital Keonjhar. The nephew died during treatment there.

The husband told that he did not have money to bring the nephew back to the village. Borrowing money from someone, she brought her husband to the village in a rented van. After bringing her husband’s body to the village, she urged the villagers to help in performing the last rites. He waited for people for hours, but no one came despite his repeated requests. The helpless husband himself took the body of the nephew to the crematorium. There she dug a pit and buried her husband.

The Odisha government had launched the Harishchandra Sahayata Yojana in 2018 to help the poor who cannot afford cremation. Under the scheme, an assistance of Rs 2,000 is provided to the family of the deceased.
But sometimes people are not able to get the benefit due to lack of awareness. People are unable to take such help because of illiterate poverty. Many people in remote parts of the state do not want to attend the process of filling the form or filling the online application. Because they feel that they will not get the benefit of it. So they choose to borrow from someone.
