This story is of 2 girls. One is 22 years old, the other is 18 years old. Both have a deep friendship. Leaving home and family, they live together. People call their relationship lesbian. In response to this, they have to say – Can’t 2 girls be close friends, can’t live together? We don’t care if people call us lesbians.

What is the matter? Before this, read this comment of the High Court in this matter…

‘The girl is an adult. You can take decisions of your life yourself.

This comment is from the High Court (Jabalpur). On 7 November, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra gave this verdict while hearing a petition filed by the father of the 18-year-old girl.

Why did the father file the petition?
The father of the 18-year-old girl had filed a petition in the High Court for the custody of the daughter. On October 14, he moved the High Court to get the custody of the daughter. Filed a Habeas corpus (habeas corpus- we will learn about it further) petition in the court. Told the court that he tried to persuade the daughter to stay at home instead of a female friend, but she did not agree. The High Court accepted the petition and issued a notice to the daughter to appear. The daughter appeared before the High Court. The court gave her one hour’s time, but the daughter refused to go with her father.

The whole matter is known from these two girls only. For the first time both the friends of Jabalpur talked to Dainik Bhaskar about their relationship. The 22-year-old girl’s marriage broke up while it was happening. The brother-in-law proposed to her in the mandap. The finger of the society was also raised on the girl. Ultimately, he decided never to marry. Both told us – what happened that they agreed to live together? People call them lesbians, how much truth is there in this? Have both got married? Bhaskar went to Jabalpur and investigated these questions.

Now know the profile of both
The story revolves around Shweta 22 and her friend Mansi, 18 years (both names are fictitious). Both have their houses in Khamaria, about 20 km from Jabalpur. They are relatives as well as neighbors. Shweta’s parents died 2 years ago due to corona. Over time, Shweta and Mansi become emotionally attached to each other so much that they are no longer ready to be separated from each other. Both the friends have now rented a room in Jabalpur for Rs 1500. His landlady told that we have no problem living with him. There is a lot of love between the two. support each other. Before the High Court’s decision, the family members used to worry a lot. Now both are living in peace.

It was the day when both of them vowed to be together till their death.

Decided on August 13, 2022 that I will not stay with my family members…
Shweta says- I like to live like boys. It’s been 2 years since parents passed away. There is an elder brother, but he has nothing to do with me, so I consider myself an orphan. My friend is my family. This is on August 13, 2022. When friend Mansi was beaten a lot by her elder brother. He also stained Mansi from the press. It is not a matter of one day, his elder brother often used to beat him badly while drunk. On this day Shweta and Mansi decided that they will no longer live with their family members.

For 8 days we were lying hungry and thirsty at Rani Kamalapati station…
Shweta told that Mansi called me and said that she does not want to stay here (in her house). I was also going to Bhopal to find a job. I said – I am going to Bhopal, you also come, so she came along. There was no place to stay, so both of us used to lie hungry and thirsty at Rani Kamalapati station from 14th August to 23rd August. In those 8 days, both of us came to know the truth of life and also came to know that we will always be together.

Shweta says, I just wanted to help my friend, but the society gave us the tag of ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’. Everyone thinks we are married, but it is nothing like that. We are friends who can do anything for each other.

Now let’s talk about Mansi…

Brother thought that I was having an affair with his friend…
Mansi says, I wanted to study further, but my mother had an accident, so I left my studies after the fourth class. Papa didn’t want to teach. They used to say that it is good if the girl stays at home. In 2017, my friendship with Shweta deepened. We both started visiting each other’s house. Shweta was dressed like a boy, but I liked her better.

My brother is addicted to alcohol. Sometimes he used to think that I was having an affair with a friend of his, and sometimes he used to say that you are having an affair with a neighbor. Sometimes he would cut me with a knife and sometimes he would shoot with the press. Parents never told him anything. After drinking alcohol, the devil used to ride on his head. He used to beat me like an animal, but the parents never stopped him. I was suffocating in my own house among my own people.

Saheli helped me break my engagement…
Mansi told- The family members had fixed the marriage against my will in January this year. When I told this to Shweta, she helped me break off the engagement. We both used to talk a lot on mobile, because both understood each other’s pain. Then brother started doubting both of us. One day he beat me like an animal on this matter, so I ran away and came to Bhopal with Shweta. No one came to know anything at home, so father got the missing report done.

Now know what is Habeas Corpus Petition?
Article 22 of the Indian Constitution provides fundamental rights to the citizens of the country. This article gives the citizen the right of habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court or High Court. The literal meaning of Habeas Corpus is ‘bodied’. This is called habeas corpus. It is used for the release of a person who has been illegally detained/captured without legal justification.
