Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff secures U.S. support for anti-terror operations. Talks cover democracy, intelligence, and regional security with key officials

Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir sought American support for its planned military assault against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during a highly-anticipated official visit to the US. The high-stakes talks, attended by top US officials, covered intelligence cooperation, democracy restoration, and maintaining peaceful relations with neighbouring nations, including India.

During his first official tour to America, General Munir engaged in key discussions with top US officials, including State Secretary Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary General Llyod Austin. The talks cantered on bilateral, global and regional security issues. Sources from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) told CNN News18 that General Munir stressed the significance of comprehending regional security perspectives, stressing the resolution of the Kashmir Issue in line with international law and relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

The US reportedly promised to extend support for Pakistan’s military actions against TTP and other terrorists along the Pak-Afghan border. During the talks, intelligence cooperation and assistance were assured to Pakistan to bolster its operations in the region. In return, American officials emphasised the restoration of complete democratic governance in Pakistan, urging free and fair elections. The top US officials also encouraged Pakistan to uphold peaceful relations with neighbouring countries, with a specific reference to India.

General Munir’s visit comes as Pakistan slowly plods its way towards the general elections slated to take place on February 8. There is uncertainty if the polls will be held on time due to security issues and the severe winter. Taliban militants in the country have increased their attacks against Pakistan since Afghanistan came under Taliban control in 2021.

Both Pakistan and the US share the view that Kabul has failed to keep its word to not allow militants to use its soil. The increase in the attacks during election seasons makes electioneering more daunting and hazardous. Adding to that, Pakistan’s political and security situation has been compounded due to economic vulnerability and it narrowly avoided the default only after the International Monetary Fund agreed to provide a USD 3 billion loan.
