On This Day In 2019: India defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 130 runs in the opening Test series encounter, held in Indore.
Indian cricket team thumped Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs to claim their first-ever Day-Night Test win on this day in 2019. The resounding victory also helped Team India in extending their winning streak to the 12th home series on the trot. The-then Virat Kohli-led side required a little more than two days to demolish Bangladesh in the second Test, which was held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
At that point, it also turned out to be the shortest Test ever, in terms of the number of balls bowled, to be played in India. With this emphatic victory, India had extended their lead in the World Test Championship (WTC) by claiming 120 points from the two-match series against Bangladesh. The hosts had decimated Bangladesh by an innings and 130 runs in the opening Test series encounter, held in Indore.
As Team India celebrate a historic Test victory today, we take a look at the special win over Bangladesh.
Led by Ishant Sharma’s deadly pace, Indian bowling unit ran through the Bangladesh lineup in the first innings. Ishant registered a sublime five-wicket haul as Bangladesh folded for a lowly 106. Only three Bangladesh cricketers— Shadman Islam, Litton Das and Nayeem Hasan—could succeed in breaching the double-digit scores in first innings. Umesh Yadav also supported Ishant nicely by claiming three wickets.
During India innings, Virat Kohli unleashed his beast mode as the India skipper scored a terrific century to gain an upper hand for the hosts. Kohli’s sublime knock of 136 comprised 18 boundaries. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane also notched half centuries each as India posted a mammoth total of 347/9 (declared).
Indian bowlers continued their red-hot form in the second innings as Bangladesh found themselves reeling at 4/13 at one point. Experienced Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim came up with a valiant knock of 74 in the second innings. Mushfiqur’s knock, however, went in vain as Bangladesh could not avoid an innings defeat.
Umesh Yadav claimed five wickets in the second innings to bundle out Bangladesh for a paltry total of 195. Ishant Sharma excelled once again with the ball having claimed four more wickets in the second innings. The lanky Indian pacer was, quite rightfully, adjudged Player of the Match for his astonishing bowling.
