Odisha: Deogarh man ‘kills’ niece to appease gods | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

SAMBALPUR: A man allegedly hacked his five-year-old niece to death to appease the gods in a bid to cure himself of mental illness at Hetkhamar village of Deogarh district on Tuesday. Police arrested Nagarjun Bhainsa (25) and seized the body of Rojalin for autopsy. The girl’s father, Susanta Bhainsalodged the case against his brother.
Police said Rojalin was at the home of her uncle Debendra Bhainsa when Nagarjun saw her. he flew into a rage and attacked her with an axe. On seeing this, Debendra tried to intervene but was held back by Nagarjun, brandishing the axe. Debendra raised an alarm, following which the villagers and Rojalin’s father arrived. Together, they overpowered Nagarjun but by that time Rojalin had bleed to death. The villagers handed over Nagarjun to the police.
Police said from preliminary investigation it appears that Nagarjun had killed the child to appease the gods to cure himself of his illness.
