Odisha: BJD announces mayor nominees for three municipal corporations | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: Putting a rest to all speculations, BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday announced mayor nominees of the party for three municipal corporations for the urban polls scheduled on March 24.
The regional party has nominated Rajya Sabha member Subash Singh as its mayor pick for the Cuttack Municipal Corporation while for the state capital (Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation), the party has fielded senior leader and state commissioner for persons with disabilities Sulochana Das.
In Berhampur, the party has picked women wing leader Sanghamitra Dalei as its mayor nominee.
Nominations for the urban polls, which has started since March 2, would continue till March 7. BJD insiders said all the three candidates are likely to file their nomination papers on Monday.
Singh’s nomination as Rajya Sabha member is aimed to further strengthen party’s organisation in Cuttack. In 2019 assembly polls, BJD lost one assembly seat (Cuttack-Barabati) to Congress’s Mohammed Moquim. Singh, who has worked for years for the interest of the slum dwellers before being elected to the Rajya Sabha, enjoys good support base among the slum dwellers.
Similarly, both Sulochana and Sanghamitra, who have started their political career in Congress, have joined the ruling dispensation a few years back.
