Since 2020, the incidents of stone pelting in the Kashmir Valley which were instigated by Pakistan came to a halt after 2020. According to statistics, in the year 2022, only 5 incidents of stone pelting were reported in the valley. Police claim that there has not been a single incident of stone pelting in Kashmir so far this year.

According to a report by the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB), Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had funded stone pelters in Kashmir to the tune of over Rs 800 crore since 2009. Due to funding from Pakistan, some organizations like the Patharbaaz Association of J&K were formed in Srinagar in 2016.

Stone pelting had become an industry in the Kashmir Valley. Money for stone pelting from Pakistan was sent to the Kashmir Valley through terrorists, handlers, hawala network and other means. From here it was distributed to stone pelting youth through a network of separatist leaders and overground workers.

stone pelters are repenting now
Adil Farooq says that at the age of 16, I used to think that problems would be solved only by stone pelting, but after going round the police and court, I understood the reality. Due to my association with the incidents of stone pelting, the loss was on me. Now I have given up on it.

I was poor and he used to give me thousand rupees
Abrar Butt says that during the crisis, an agent instigated me to pelt stones. Handed over thousand rupees to me. We were told where to pelt stones the next day. I made it work, but I had to worry later.

Due to these 4 reasons there was success in banning stone pelting

1. Zero tolerance policy on stone pelting by NIA, Police and other agencies.
2. Financial agencies of the government banned hawala and foreign funding.
3. De-radicalization program to wean youth away from religious fundamentalism.
4. The stone pelters were sent to jails in Agra, Tihar and other states.
